Now entering its fifth year, the Black Authors Festival has emerged as a nationally recognized cultural institution dedicated to celebrating Black authorship, literary excellence, intellectual leadership, and the enduring power of Black storytelling.
Founded and led by Darlene Williams, the Festival brings together acclaimed authors, cultural leaders, journalists, thought leaders, entertainers, and influential voices for an elevated literary experience that extends beyond the traditional book festival. Its programming explores the intersection of literature, culture, media, education, intellectual freedom, and legacy.
The Festival's mission is deeply rooted in literacy advocacy and the preservation of Black stories. Through its programming and national advocacy efforts, the Black Authors Festival works to raise awareness of literacy disparities within the Black community, defend intellectual freedom and the First Amendment right to free speech, and challenge the growing suppression and banning of Black literature.
The Festival has earned national recognition from USA Today as one of the Top 9 Best New Festivals in the nation, further establishing its place within the national cultural landscape.
Its impact has also been formally recognized at the civic level. August has been officially designated Black Authors Festival Month throughout Suffolk County, New York, recognizing the Festival's growing contribution to literature, culture, literacy awareness, and the broader community.
As the Black Authors Festival enters its fifth year, it continues to expand its role as a national platform for Black literary excellence, cultural preservation, intellectual freedom, and the voices shaping generations to come.
